I’m traveling aboard the National Geographic Explorer on an epic voyage. Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic are the generous sponsors of Meet the North, and their ship is taking me up the west coast of Ellesmere Island as I type.
In an hour, we will enter Eureka Sound and begin to explore the world between two mythic islands: Ellesmere and Axel Heiberg.
These waters are almost always clogged with ice, so we are taking advantage of a rare set of ice and wind conditions. It’s all very exciting. We passed through Hell’s Gate this morning, and we find ourselves in waters that few souls have seen.
We watched a polar bear on a kill today on this very ice. This photo by David Cothran sets the scene.
Bon Voyage. Here we go. (Updates will continue pending signal strength.)
