Joining the feast

Post 1 of 4 |    The feast is almost ready. People are gathering around the community hall and choosing their spots for this special meal. Four long strips of plastic and then cardboard are laid out on the floor. Next, the frozen meat, cut with hand saws, is evenly spread out. You must bring your own knife if you want to eat.

Deputy Mayor Eleanor Pitseolak (right) and Erica Koonark (left) help to lay it all out: Arctic char, caribou, aged walrus and aged narwhal.

The hamlet recruited a special group of hunters and hunter’s helpers to bring caribou back from the mainland. They will be celebrated tonight.
