So long, sunshine

Happy Father’s Day to Iceland and Norway! Two Arctic countries celebrate their dads today, and we are joining in with our appreciation for father figures of all kinds.

During spring in Pond Inlet, Nunavut, Carey Elverum walks his daughter Naya home from school. As you can see, it’s getting warm enough to walk without mittens. The sky is bright in this photo . . . which brings me to another subject entirely; for citizens of Pond, the dark season begins today.
Yesterday, the sun rose at 11:20 a.m. and set at 12:31 p.m. Today, November 13th, the sun won’t rise at all.

The dark season has its own gifts, and the sun will return on January 29th.
