Quiet work

Keeping watch.

Every hour that we travel on the National Geographic Explorer there is at least one person on constant watch. Often, watchmen find wildlife that will delight everyone on board. More often, they silently search for hazards and therefore help to keep us safe. This quiet work is essential to our well-being, and many of us never realize that the ice we rush outside to admire must also be skillfully handled by the bridge team, one piece at a time.

With gratitude for Ivan, pictured here, and the rest of the crew.
