(Part 3 of 3) Here is part of the SMART ICE collaboration in action. Andre Arreak from Pond Inlet and Christian Haas from York University (on the right, with the cold weather mask!). They are measuring sea ice thickness around this iceberg, and what a view. Can you see the raven at the top of…

To the iceberg
(Post 1 of 3) This berg is within walking distance from town, though many make the trip out by skidoo. Aside from being very beautiful, it’s a destination for ice harvesters. Iceberg meltwater makes the best tea in town. Photo by Eric Guth

(Post 2 of 3) This iceberg is both a thing of beauty and a hub of activity. Here, you can see the ice quarry. People journey out here to gather ice for tea water, and the back side of this berg, where I’m standing, is ankle deep in loose blocks of ice that are ready…

(Post 3 of 3) Cold light to match the evening. We’ve lit up the local iceberg just as the sky is darkening. Time to fire up the snowmobile and head off to bed.

Maktak
A tale of two lunches. I prepare carrots, cheese, hummus and veggies (plus that special Arctic tomato), while Alex gets her maktak ready. Maktak is narwhal skin with a thin layer of fat. It’s eaten raw – this piece had been in the freezer until Alex thawed it in the microwave. She uses an ulu…

We’re on our way home from a community meeting about marine transportation corridors where we heard from some young scientists about the participatory process they facilitated this week. This town sits at the intersection of many important issues facing the Arctic. Outside, snowmobile engines echo as families head home. Each…

Frosty morning
We’re loving the weather! Eric Guth’s portrait of me after a couple of hours outdoors. Pond Inlet in March is a world of frosty light. It was -28°C this morning, which is pretty warm for everyone but us. Photo by Eric Guth

Arrival in Pond Inlet
Pond Inlet, Nunavut. We are happy to be here. We filled our first evening by marvelling at the light and strolling the streets while our parka hoods gathered haloes of frost. Many people waved as they skidooed by, and a few kids called out: “What is your name?!?” We’ll have lots of names to learn…

Flying over Baffin Island
Dreamworld from 23,000 feet. Soaring north over Baffin Island on the approach to Pond Inlet. Sea ice on our right and this view on our left, looking inland. During the flight: ice, moraines, and arêtes to inspire the glaciologists, but also shadow, light and mystery to fuel the spirit. Photo by Eric Guth
