(Part 3 of 3) Here is part of the SMART ICE collaboration in action. Andre Arreak from Pond Inlet and Christian Haas from York University (on the right, with the cold weather mask!). They are measuring sea ice thickness around this iceberg, and what a view. Can you see the raven at the top of…

(Post 3 of 3) Cold light to match the evening. We’ve lit up the local iceberg just as the sky is darkening. Time to fire up the snowmobile and head off to bed.

Pond Inlet, late evening
Evening stroll through Pond Inlet. We’re on our way home from a community meeting about marine transportation corridors where we heard from some young scientists about the participatory process they facilitated this week. This town sits at the intersection of many important issues facing the Arctic. Outside, snowmobile engines echo as families head home. Each…

Arrival in Pond Inlet
Pond Inlet, Nunavut. We are happy to be here. We filled our first evening by marvelling at the light and strolling the streets while our parka hoods gathered haloes of frost. Many people waved as they skidooed by, and a few kids called out: “What is your name?!?” We’ll have lots of names to learn…

Flying over Baffin Island
Dreamworld from 23,000 feet. Soaring north over Baffin Island on the approach to Pond Inlet. Sea ice on our right and this view on our left, looking inland. During the flight: ice, moraines, and arêtes to inspire the glaciologists, but also shadow, light and mystery to fuel the spirit. Photo by Eric Guth

Athlete in Pond Inlet, Nunavut
I have left the Canadian Arctic for the time being, but I keep thinking back to the warm welcome we received in Pond Inlet. The cultural show, complete with incredible feats like this high kick, involved community members of all ages. An elder lit the qulliq; a toddler sat in his mother’s amauti while she…

Pond Inlet, Nunavut
I met Agnes in Pond Inlet where I took this photo after hearing this story. In 1986, some visitors came and took pictures of Agnes and her family at their camp outside of Igloolik. Recently, she found the pictures online. They are being sold as puzzles, cups, and t-shirts. “It’s no fair to me or…
