Antarctica

Some birds in the Drake Passage in Antarctica.

Time to be a snowbird

It’s time to be a snowbird. Find your flock and fly in formation. It might be stormy out there but oh so beautiful. You can cross the rough water together … these beauties are soaring the Drake Passage. Photo by Eric Guth Togetherness is my theme this week after an inspiring visit with @chickandowldesign and @clairetansey. (Plus some time…

Penguins in Antarctica.

Flipping around

Flipping it around to the other pole for a sec here – bear with me – it’s World Penguin Day! And everything looks better with a penguin, no? Even this gorgeous ship, the penguin really sets it off. Don’t you think? Happy World Penguin Day! (This day marks the beginning of the penguins’ northward migration….

A pair of Arctic terns.

Ultra-marathon

We’re sharing stories from the north again starting today, which gives me a chance to celebrate this little bird and its incredible feats of strength. Arctic terns are at home in both the Arctic and the Antarctic . . . they are our polar transition bird! They can fly 40,000 kms/year, which is the furthest…

A formidable wave.

Stormy sea

The fair breeze blew, the white foam flew, / The furrow followed free; / We were the first that ever burst / Into that silent sea. – Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Into the Drake Passage, a place of wonder and, occasionally, fear.

Mothership

Being in Antarctica is the closest I’ll ever come to visiting another planet. We survive only because of the comfort and provisions of our mothership (and let’s face it, we do more than survive!), but even she looks out of place here sometimes.
 Heading north means heading home.

Jenny & Eric in a boat.

Team photo

Another journey to another part of this planet where I have the privilege of meeting people and asking questions while Eric uses his talent to share the mood and the moment through photography. Every time we work together we take a team portrait, so this is us saying goodbye to the Antarctic (though we’ve got…

A white bird flies over sea ice.

Wild ones

I’ve loved posting some #meetthesouth stories from the Antarctic. We’re headed north again soon, but not before we share a few more themes – like birds! Do you see the snow petrel? White as the sea ice, fleeting as the fog, and as charismatic as the Antarctic itself, it’s often the wild ones that role…
